Indigenous Health


Overview

The Indigenous Health project works with the Indigenous community and General practice to help close the Gap of Indigenous disadvantage through establishing networks, providing training and support as well as direct service delivery in the following sectors :

  • Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • General Practitioners
  • Community Organisations


Objectives

  • To engage with members of the Indigenous community to enable them to identify their priority health and wellbeing issues
  • To map existing organisations that provide services for Indigenous people in the region
  • To Identify gaps in health services for Indigenous people in the area
  • Provide or assist in the development of direct services where appropriate services don’t exist.
  • To assist general practice to provide best possible services to Indigenous community 
     

Strategies

  1. Work with parents through schools and community organisations to increase their health literacy skills.
  2. Encourage Indigenous people to use available health services including Indigenous child and adult health checks.
  3. Work with schools that have large indigenous enrollments to identify and address health needs.
  4. Provide training and support for General Practice in the area of Indigenous health.
